I have a vintage kelly green blazer with angles so sharp, tailoring so precise and shoulder pads so assertive that wearing it always makes me feel like I could arm wrestle any challenge and win.
One time while sporting it, a friend asked me if I had ever seen the ’80s cult classic Heathers, saying that my outfit reminded her of the movie. I hadn’t, but I resolved to watch it at the first chance. That chance came one night while I was stranded alone in a hotel room in an unfamiliar city due to a cancelled flight.
Truth be told, this is probably not the ideal way to first experience Heathers—at least not if you’re stumbling into the film completely unaware of what’s to come, as I was. So if you’re going to watch it, be warned: It’s dark! It’s a comedy! There’s lots of teen suicide! Despite the fact that it’s about high school, it’s no Mean Girls!
All in all, though, Heathers provides a clever critique of the groupthink and popularity games that so often mark the high school experience. And beyond the epic blazers, there are some other very memorable fashion moments courtesy of young Winona Ryder. Check out my favorite looks from the movie.
